Can you afford to wait?
New Zealand’s public system is excellent in an emergency, but waiting lists for elective surgery, specialist appointments, or diagnostic scans can stretch for months. Health Insurance gives you faster access to private treatment. It’s not about luxury — it’s about timing.
What It Helps With
Health Insurance can cover things like:
- Specialist consultations
- Diagnostic imaging (MRI, CT scans)
- Elective surgeries
- Private hospital stays
- Some treatment costs not fully covered publicly
Having this cover gives you choice and control instead of waiting to see whether you qualify for public treatment.
Health Insurance isn’t only for ‘big surgery’. It also covers the smaller health issues that may not feel life threatening, but can have a significant impact on your day-to-day life if you’re left waiting for treatment.
Who It’s For
Health Insurance is especially valuable if you:
- Can’t afford long time off work
- Run a business that relies on you
- Have children and want faster access to care
- Want certainty around treatment timing
- Prefer choice over waiting lists
Sometimes the hardest part isn’t the procedure — it’s the waiting.
A Real Example
Lauren is a florist who started feeling nauseous every couple of days. It wasn’t stopping her from working, but it wasn’t going away. A few months later she noticed blood in her urine and went straight to her GP.
Because she had Health Insurance, she was able to get a CT scan the same week. The scan revealed a large kidney stone, too big to pass naturally, requiring laser treatment and a night in hospital.
Although the condition wasn’t life-threatening, Lauren was told that without insurance her surgery would likely have been 12–18 months away, unless the pain became unbearable. With her comprehensive Health Insurance, she was booked in for surgery within six weeks.
Afterwards, Lauren realised how different things could have been without cover. Her only option would have been to pay privately. The total cost for the surgery and one night in hospital was $17,500. With insurance, she paid just her $500 excess.
Most people can’t afford to pay $17,500 out of pocket. Lauren’s experience is a reminder of the value of having Health Insurance in place before you need it.
What Most People Don’t Realise
Health Insurance policies vary widely.
Excess levels, surgical-only plans, specialist-only options, and add-ons — the structure matters. Some plans look affordable but leave significant gaps.
My role is to help you balance premium cost with meaningful cover so you’re protected where it actually counts.
